Choose to Lose: Week 5

Week Five: Accountability

“Stop saying I wish; start saying I will.”

Accountability can be an important factor when it comes to weight loss success. This accountability can come from within or through others. Self-monitoring your daily food intake increases your success rate of weight loss because it makes you aware of what you are consuming and where extra calories may be coming from. Recording your fitness goals can also help hold you accountable and allow you to set realistic weekly or monthly goals.

An accountability partner has also shown to be effective with weight loss goals. Inform your spouse, friend or co-workers of your goals to help you stay accountable. This may even lead them to jump on board with you and start their own weight loss journey.

So, grab a notebook or download a food intake and fitness app and start recording!

Don’t Forget! Remember, your goal is to record your weight at least once each week for all eight weeks of the challenge. Complete the challenge to earn 25 Healthy Habit points.

Well in Mind: Understanding Non-Suicidal Self-Injury

March is Self-Harm Awareness Month.  When people experience depression and anxiety, they may engage in non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI).  NSSI is intentionally inflicting harm to the body but without intention of dying.  NSSI is not a mental illness, it is a sign someone is going through serious psychological distress

How to Deal With Self-Harm
Emotions can be really painful sometimes. It’s totally normal to need ways to cope with and process the hard things in your life. If you are using self-harm to manage your emotions, here are some ways to push through, process, and cope with your emotions.

  • Text to cool down:  If you’re dealing with painful emotions, you can reach out to a crisis text line to connect with a real human and strategize healthy coping mechanisms to manage your emotions. Text HOME to 741741.
  • Get creative:  Studies show that making art can help people process emotions.  Next time you feel like self-harming, grab a marker and doodle your worries away. A bonus: you reap the same rewards even if you’re no good at it!
  • Find your Zen:  Keeping yourself safe from self-harming is all about finding healthy alternatives to work through the hard stuff. Taking time to re-center through meditation to be a powerful way to find your cool and calm. Try using an app like Headspace.
  • Talk to a professional: Self-harm is serious.  Talking to someone who can help you find alternatives is incredibly important.

Well In Mind is here for you.  Call 815-933-2240 to schedule an appointmentor to ask about your EAP benefits.

Celebrating Certified Nurses Day

Riverside Healthcare is celebrating Certified Nurses Day on March 19 by honoring its board-certified nurses.

Board certification of nurses plays an increasingly important role in the assurance of high standards of care for patients and their loved ones. Nursing, like health care in general, has become increasingly complex. While a registered nurse (RN) license provides entry to general nursing practice, the knowledge-intensive requirements of modern nursing require extensive education, as well as a strong personal commitment to excellence by the nurse.

Riverside Healthcare encourages national board certification for all its nurses. There are many nursing certification specialties, such as medical-surgical, pediatric, pain management, cardiovascular, oncology, hospice, case management, emergency nursing, critical care, and many others. Many nursing certification bodies exist to serve the full range of specialized nursing care offered in the contemporary health care system; national nurse-certifying bodies should be accredited by the Accreditation Board for Specialty Nursing Certification (ABSNC) or the National Organization for Competence Assurance (NOCA).

Please join Riverside Healthcare and the nation’s national nursing certification organizations in honoring those hardworking, dedicated nurses for their professionalism, commitment, and a job well done!

The following is a list of certified nurses that are being recognized for their professionalism, leadership, and commitment to excellence in patient care:

Nominate a fellow nurse for a DAISY Award

The DAISY Award is an international program that rewards and celebrates the extraordinary compassionate and skillful care given by nurses every day.

Riverside Healthcare is proud to be DAISY Award Partner, recognizing one of our nurses with this special honor once a month.

About The DAISY Foundation

The DAISY Foundation was established in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes who died of complications of the auto-immune disease Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura (ITP) at the age of 33. (DAISY is an acronym for diseases attacking the immune system.) During Pat’s eight-week hospitalization, his family was awestruck by the care and compassion his nurses provided not only to Pat but to everyone in his family. So one of the goals they set in creating a Foundation in Pat’s memory was to recognize extraordinary nurses everywhere who make an enormous difference in the lives of so many people by the super-human work they do every day.

The DAISY Award

Each DAISY Award Honoree will be recognized at a ceremony in her/his unit and will receive a beautiful certificate, a DAISY Award pin, and a hand-carved stone sculpture entitled A Healer’s Touch.
